Green growth and security to underpin UK relationships with Indonesia and South Korea
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss travels to Indonesia and South Korea for talks with counterparts on boosting trade, security and climate cooperation.
The Foreign Secretary will travel to Indonesia and the Republic of Korea on 9 and 10 November for in-person talks with her counterparts to strengthen the UK’s relationships in the Indo-Pacific region.
In Jakarta, the Foreign Secretary will meet Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi to discuss bilateral cooperation and strengthen the UK-Indonesia partnership. Discussions are expected to cover trade, investment and climate action, as well as security and defense.
The Foreign Secretary will also visit South Korea and meet with her counterpart, Foreign Minister Park Jin, in Seoul. The pair will discuss shared security concerns, trade, and the transition to net zero. The UK and South Korea are already major economic partners and share similar values, including a commitment to democracy, human rights and free trade.
The Foreign Secretary’s visit to Indonesia and South Korea follows last month’s launch of the UK’s Indo-Pacific Tilt, a major shift in the UK’s foreign policy to re-engage with the region and recognize its increasing strategic importance.
The Foreign Secretary said:
The UK is committed to building stronger relationships with our partners in the Indo-Pacific. Indonesia and South Korea are key countries in the region and we share common interests in areas such as trade, security and climate change.
I look forward to meeting my counterparts in Jakarta and Seoul to discuss how we can work together to build a more secure, prosperous and sustainable future for our countries and the wider region.
