News release January 12, 2023
The Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, and the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, today issued the following statement on Canada’s invocation of dispute settlement under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) with New Zealand:
“Canada has today requested dispute settlement consultations with New Zealand under the CPTPP regarding New Zealand’s dairy tariff rate quota (TRQ) administration. This request comes after ongoing efforts to resolve this matter bilaterally have not been successful.
“Canada has been monitoring New Zealand’s administration of its dairy TRQs since the CPTPP entered into force in December 2018. Canada believes that New Zealand has not been administering its dairy TRQs in accordance with its commitments under the CPTPP.
“Canada’s dairy industry is vital to our economy and to the livelihoods of thousands of Canadians. We are committed to ensuring that our dairy producers have a fair and level playing field in international markets.
“Canada has always been a strong supporter of the rules-based international trading system. We believe that dispute settlement is an important tool for resolving trade disputes and ensuring that all parties uphold their commitments.
“Canada remains committed to working with New Zealand to resolve this issue and to strengthen our bilateral trade relationship.”
